Refugee Rights and Responsibilities
This ICAR research project will address how the particular experiences and legal status of refugees affects their own understanding and perception of their rights and responsibilities in the UK.
Refugees constitute an important minority in Britain’s cultural, social and political history. ICAR’s Rights and Responsibilities research and consultation project explores some fundamental questions about the place of refugees in contemporary British society and, in particular, how the experiences and legal status of refugees shapes their understanding and perceptions of important social changes that are at the heart of current political debates. The project focuses generally on issues related to citizenship, identity, multiculturalism, migration and integration, and specifically on rights and responsibilities as the cornerstones of new citizenship.
The project incorporates the following stages:
- Online consultations: four online fora were developed on this site, encouraging refugees, academics, policy makers and service providers tosubmit their views on different issues related to rights and responsibilities.
- Literature reviews: two literature reviews were conducted to provide the conceptual framework for the research phase of this project. These can be seen in the box below.
- 45 in-depth interviews will be conducted with Colombian, Somali and Tamil refugees in London
The final project report will be published in June 2009
