Employment

Research on the issue of refugee employment not only looks at the barriers that refugees and asylum seekers face when trying to secure suitable work, but also uses the employment levels and experiences of this group in order to explore various aspects of refugee integration.

Along with health, education and housing, the area of employment has been identified by the Home Office as one of the key indicators of integration, and means to achieving it. ICAR's briefing on refugee employment looks first at relevant legislation and the current policy context. It goes on to focus on a series of sub-topics, including the asylum process and employment, refugees in the labour market, and barriers to employment.

Briefing written by Mary Carter and Jacob Lagnado.
