Tuesday June 22nd

'From abstract theory to emotionally driven research: perils of researching vulnerable groups'

Dr Liza Schuster (City University) explores two extremes of research on asylum seekers and refugees: that which fails to ground itself in the lived experience of the research subjects, and that which claims to 'give voice to the voiceless' but risks substituting emotion for analysis.

Tuesday May 25th

'Researching Undocumented Migrants:  the fieldwork experience'

Professor Alice Bloch, City University, London

This presentation will explore and reflect on some of the key issues that influenced and affected the research process and the fieldwork experiences in a qualitative study of young undocumented migrants in England. A number of areas will be examined including: carrying out research with potentially vulnerable and sometimes hidden groups, the role of researchers with language skills, access, trust, sampling and representation.

Professor Bloch is co-author of ‘No right to dream': The social and economic lives of young undocumented migrants in Britain (Paul Hamlyn Foundation 2009)
