Appeal Process

The right of appeal is a legal safeguard, providing independent judicial oversight of executive decision-making.

The Home Office has described the asylum appeals system as being subject to a ‘pervasive culture of abuse' by asylum seekers5 and it has successively sought to reduce the number of applicants and the administrative burden by restricting rights of in-country appeal and through restructuring the process entirely. This briefing, written by ICAR to assist the work of the Independent Asylum Commission (IAC), summarise key changes and issues in the Asylum Appeals process in the UK.
