Staying: Dream, Bin, Soft Stud and Other Stories by Oreet Ashery brings together the stories of women who fled home countries such as Nigeria, Uganda and Jamaica for Britain due to their sexuality. Produced in collaboration with the UK Lesbian and Gay Immigration Group.

The All Wales NGO Children’s Policy Group, which includes the Welsh Refugee Council, has published a Child and adolescent mental health briefing

 

IRR Briefing Paper No. 5: Youth deaths: the reality behind the “knife crime” debate from the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) deals among many other aspects with the vulnerability of refugees and new migrants to knife crime.

 

Submissions are invited for a special issue of an academic journal looking at Forced Migration and Mobilities Research. Contributions should analyse environmentally induced migration from a mobilities perspective.Deadline: 5 February. Email Nick Gill or Javier Caletrío at Lancaster University.

Policy and law

 

Lord West of Spithead has confirmed to the House of Lords that during 2009 111 children were detained at Tinsley House immigration removal centre for more than 72 hours.

 

Immigration Minister Phil Woolas has provided parliament with figures for charter flights removing immigration detainees and destinations. This week sees protests against the first Joint European Union Charter flight (‘Flight PVT-JEUC’) under the new scheme agreed at the EU summit in Brussels last year.
