'Employment issues for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK'

[updated July 2008]
Written by Mary Carter and based upon the 2003 guide written by Kirsteen Tait.

Research on the issue of refugee employment not only looks at the barriers that refugees and asylum seekers face when trying to secure suitable work, but also uses the employment levels and experiences of this group in order to explore various aspects of refugee integration.

Along with health, education and housing, the area of employment has been identified by the Home Office as one of the key indicators of integration, and means to achieving it. ICAR's navigation guide on refugee employment looks first at relevant legislation and policy before turning to a number of key issues. These include the current policy shift towards subsuming refugee employment under the broader rubric of managed migration; the impact of immigration status on access to employment; the treatment of refugee employment as an issue of integration; and existing research into refugee employment, followed by a separate discussion of some of the problems surrounding data collection.
