Context
With a population of approximately 534,500, Sheffield is England's third largest metropolitan authority in South Yorkshire.
Informally, the city is widely known as "the largest village in England", however is relatively geographically isolated, being cut off from other places by a ring of hills.
Despite the fact that international competition in iron and steel led to a decline in traditional local industries during the 1970s and 1980s, the 21st century has seen extensive redevelopment in Sheffield and in other British cities.
Today, the city of Sheffield hosts a great variety of ethnic minority communities, with around 14% of its population from black or minority ethnic groups.
