Understanding the stranger research

This research project is based on the experience of areas of the UK into which significant numbers of asylum seekers and refugees have recently arrived or have been imminently expected to arrive.

In July 2003 ICAR published interim case study findings detailing the experiences of Bicester, where the accommodation centre will be built, and Leeds, a dispersal area city with a history of refugee settlement. A final report, including additional research findings from Dover, Leicester, Newcastle and Oakington, was published in February 2004.

The research was carried out by Lisa D'Onofrio and Karen Munk, and was funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
